Meet Principal Prather

Principal Prather

Mr. Prather is a passionate advocate for students’ equitable access to both a world-class education and a successful future. He has over twenty-five years of educational experience and is a pioneer in the increasingly specialized field of alternative education for at-risk student populations.

He graduated as a non-traditional student from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa with a BS in elementary education in 1988 and began working on the Omaha Indian Reservation where he taught kindergarten, 6th grade, and served as the head football coach of the high school team. He moved to Arizona in 1992 and began working for the Gilbert Public School District where he opened Gilbert’s first alternative school with 30 students. In 1995, he completed his M.Ed. in educational leadership with a Principal K–12 Certificate from Northern Arizona University (NAU). As principal, he led the school to a peak attendance of 400 students.

In 2005, the Mesa Public School District recruited Mr. Prather to meet the challenges of the distressed McKellips Middle School. The 5th to 9th grade alternative school realized a 75% decline in behavior referrals over four years while doubling student enrollment.

In 2018, Student Choice High School hired Mr. Prather to run the Tempe Campus. Under his leadership, the Tempe campus experienced a 71.5% growth in Drop Out Recovery (DRP) enrollment and a 180% growth in the number of graduates.

We are thrilled to have Greg now applying his leadership and innovative abilities to our South Phoenix campus at the Salvation Army Kroc Center. As part of the leadership team at the Kroc Center location, he works tirelessly along with our other leaders to provide innovative solutions to empower our students’ progress towards graduation. He consistently keeps everyone focused on our institutional mission to motivate students to come to school and learn every day; to educate students using the best possible curriculum and highly qualified staff; and to graduate students into a successful, productive, and exciting future.
